ALL-FOOD CALCIUM RICH SUPPLEMENT
A few years ago my unconventional dentist recommended this eggshell-based supplement to remineralize my teeth. I have autoimmune issues and need extra support in that department. She swears by it after having used it as part of a comprehensive protocol that helped her heal from Lyme’s disease.
The powder is mostly rich in calcium carbonate, but it also contains protein collagen from the membrane attached to the shell. I found research published on PubMed that suggests that food based calcium from egg shells is potentially more bioavailable (absorbable) than that of calcium supplements. Some studies also found that along with vitamin D3 and magnesium, it significantly strengthens bones by improving bone mineral density in studies done on postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.
An extra incentive to make this is that it’s another way of reducing food waste. Many people know that egg shells are good for composting to fertilize soil. I like to think of this supplement as a direct calcium rich fertilizer for our bones.
How great is it to make your very own calcium supplement?
INGREDIENTS
Egg shells
Oven
Blender or coffee grinder
Start by saving eggshells in your fridge. It goes beyond saying that for best results, use the best quality, freshest eggs you can find.
Once you’ve collected about a dozen, wash them thoroughly with water and put them in a pot with water to cover. Bring to a boil and boil for 10-15 minutes.
Drain and line them on a towel, facing down, to air-dry overnight.
The next day, transfer to a baking sheet to thoroughly dry in the oven at 200 F for 10-15 minutes.
Remove from oven and transfer to a blender (or coffee grinder to pulverize as fine as possible. Store in a tightly sealed jar and keep in a cool, dark place.
Take 1/2-1 teaspoon daily, mixed into a smoothie, yogurt, chia pudding, or mixed into morning oats.
